Dr Edwina Leslie
Ed is a veterinarian from Sydney who’s had an interest in all things animal-related from a very early age. She has worked in a diverse range of fields including clinical practice, research and international development.
She completed her undergraduate studies at Sydney University. Following her interests in livestock and preventive medicine, she completed a PhD in veterinary epidemiology. Her research focussed on classical swine fever transmission and pig movements across eastern Indonesia. There she developed mitigation strategies to support smallholder farmers. This project gave her the opportunity to live in Indonesia and see first-hand the benefits of applied epidemiology to improve human and animal health.
Since joining the Ausvet team at the beginning of 2017, she has worked on a variety of projects. These have focussed on disease surveillance in terrestrial and aquatic animals, emergency response and preparedness, animal health across Southeast Asia and the Pacific, One Health and animal welfare. This job allows her to fulfil her interests in veterinary science, epidemiology and international development.
Ed is currently studying for her epidemiology memberships with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. Outside of work, Ed continues to work as a locum clinical veterinarian. She also enjoys the outdoors, particularly kayaking, hiking and taking her dog Bodhi for walks.
